WSOPE Event #1 Winner Jesper Hougaard of Denmark

Denmark was the first country representative to win this year's World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) event with more to come. Jesper Hougaard walks off with the modest prize of $144,218 but will definitely have made a name for himself.

"I cannot describe my feelings in words," Hougaard said. "I am simply overwhelmed. Yesterday, I was chip leader for quite some time, and then it slowly dawned on me that I could possibly win this thing."

For Hougaard, this was more than just the prize money, his 2008 WSOPE win was also about history. The 24-year-old professional Danish poker player is the first player to win a gold bracelet on both sides of the Atlantic. He is also the second player to win multiple gold bracelets in a single year of World Series of Poker events. John Phan won two gold bracelets at this year's WSOP in Las Vegas.

Hougaard beat out a field of 410 entrants.
